A piece can fit beautifully in a room and still be difficult to get there. Before you place an order, check both its final position and the entire delivery route. Keep the numbers, photographs, and any uncertainties in one message for the maker or delivery team.

Mark out the footprint in the room.

Record the proposed width, depth, and height. Mark the footprint on the floor with a removable material that is safe for your flooring, then move through the room as you normally would. Open nearby doors and drawers and pull out chairs. The footprint alone will not show the space those movements need.

For wall storage, record the position of baseboards, outlets, switches, vents, and other obstacles. Ask the maker about clearances and any attachment requirements for the specific design. Do not infer suitability for a wall or a load from an image.

Ask which dimensions will arrive at your door.

The dimensions on a product listing may describe the assembled furniture. Packaging can be larger, while a piece with removable legs may travel in a smaller form. Ask for the dimensions and weight of the largest package or section.

Confirm who is responsible for any disassembly and reassembly. Do not assume that an upholstered sofa, cabinet, or table can be taken apart just because one component appears removable in a photo.

Check every part of the route.

Start where the delivery vehicle can stop and finish where the piece will be placed. Record the narrow points and turns, not just the front door. A narrow hallway after a wide doorway can be the limiting step.

Send photographs and measurements to the delivery provider and ask them to assess the route. Comparing one furniture dimension with one doorway dimension does not prove a piece can turn through the space.

  • Building entrance and clear door opening
  • Hallways, corners, and door swing
  • Stair width, landings, overhead space, and railings
  • Elevator door, cabin dimensions, and building requirements
  • Parking, loading access, steps, and the final room entrance

Confirm the delivery scope before paying.

Ask whether the quote covers curbside drop-off, delivery into the room, assembly, and packaging removal. If your building requires an elevator reservation or paperwork, arrange that with the building and delivery provider ahead of time.

Agree what happens if access is not possible, when you can inspect the item, and how to report delivery damage. Keep the answers with the quote so the maker, carrier, and customer are working from the same plan.
